Adult Performer Sentenced in Cuyahoga Valley National Park Murder

Date:

The tragic case of Chelsea Perkins, a former adult performer and U.S. Coast Guard veteran, has reached its conclusion in federal court. Perkins was sentenced to 22½ years in prison for the murder of Matthew Dunmire, a 31-year-old aspiring musician and father, in Cuyahoga Valley National Park in March 2021.

According to prosecutors, Perkins lured Dunmire into meeting her under the guise of reconciliation, after previously accusing him of sexual assault years earlier—allegations that were never legally pursued. The two met in Ohio, stayed overnight at an Airbnb, and the next morning walked into the woods of the national park. It was there that Perkins shot Dunmire in the back of the head.

Investigators later discovered compelling evidence against Perkins, including a firearm connected to the murder, her DNA, and deleted notes suggesting an attempted cover-up. She also had a noose tattoo inked shortly after the killing, further complicating the case.

In court, Perkins pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and a firearms charge. While her defense pointed to past trauma, PTSD, and sexual assault experiences as mitigating factors, the judge described the act as “coldly calculated.” The emotional sentencing hearing included heartfelt statements from Dunmire’s grieving family, who emphasized the devastating loss his young children now face.

This case highlights the complex intersection of trauma, revenge, and justice. It also raises difficult questions about how courts balance mental health and past experiences against deliberate acts of violence.

With sentencing complete, Perkins will serve more than two decades in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release. Restitution to the victim’s family is still pending.
