The Florida Panthers put on a clinic in Game 5 of their playoff series against the Toronto Maple Leafs, steamrolling to a commanding 6-1 victory and taking a 3-2 lead in the series. With the series returning to Florida, the Panthers are now just one win away from advancing.
Sam Reinhart was the engine behind Florida’s offense, notching two key assists and continuing to be a nightmare for Toronto’s defensive core. The Panthers came out aggressive, scoring three goals in the opening period to take control early. Matthew Tkachuk and Carter Verhaeghe also added to the scoreboard, displaying Florida’s depth and offensive firepower.
But the real star of the night was Sergei Bobrovsky. The veteran netminder turned away 31 of 32 shots, frustrating a Maple Leafs offense that looked out of sync for most of the game. Toronto’s lone goal came late in the second period, but it was too little, too late.
The Maple Leafs simply couldn’t get anything going. Turnovers in the neutral zone, missed power play opportunities, and a lack of physicality all contributed to one of their most lopsided losses of the postseason. Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner were largely held in check, as the Panthers smothered Toronto’s top line.
Game 6 now becomes do-or-die for Toronto. If they want to keep their Stanley Cup dreams alive, they’ll need a complete turnaround in Florida, especially in the defensive zone and on special teams.
With momentum firmly in Florida’s hands, the Maple Leafs face their biggest test yet.
