WOW!! I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS IS ETHIOPIA! ROUND 2 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – A Hidden Gem in East Africa

Date:

Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, is one of East Africa’s most surprising cities, and my recent return to this incredible destination has left me even more impressed than before. In this article, I’ll take you through my second round of exploring Addis Ababa, and why I believe this vibrant metropolis is one of the most underrated cities in Africa that you absolutely have to visit!

A City That Surprises at Every Turn

From its stunning landscapes to its rich history, Addis Ababa offers so much more than meets the eye. Initially, many people might not expect this bustling city to be packed with surprises. However, after spending time in its lively streets, vibrant markets, and incredible historical sites, it’s clear that Addis Ababa is far from ordinary.

Whether you’re exploring the bustling Merkato market (Africa’s largest open-air market) or marveling at the historical and cultural gems like the National Museum of Ethiopia or the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Addis Ababa consistently leaves you in awe. The city’s blend of modernity and tradition makes it a fascinating destination for anyone interested in experiencing the true heart of Africa.

A Cultural Hub in East Africa

Addis Ababa is the political and diplomatic heart of Africa, serving as the headquarters for the African Union (AU) and numerous international organizations. This makes the city a central point for both African politics and culture. It’s a city where people from all corners of the continent come together, blending cultures, languages, and histories into an incredible melting pot.

During my visit, I was particularly struck by the diversity of the local people, the warm hospitality of Ethiopians, and the vibrant arts and music scene. From the Ethio-jazz rhythms to the traditional dance performances, Addis Ababa is a city that celebrates creativity and expression at every corner.

Addis Ababa’s Unique History and Landmarks

What truly sets Addis Ababa apart from other cities in East Africa is its rich history. The city has played a significant role in African independence and the fight against colonialism. Visiting the African Union headquarters gives you a sense of how pivotal Addis Ababa has been to the entire continent.

Another must-visit spot is the National Museum of Ethiopia, where you can learn about the country’s fascinating past, including the famous fossil discovery of Lucy (Australopithecus afarensis), one of humanity’s oldest ancestors. It’s not just about history, though—the museum is a great way to understand Ethiopia’s culture and artistic legacy through its collections of traditional art, artifacts, and religious relics.

Delicious Ethiopian Cuisine

Of course, no visit to Addis Ababa is complete without indulging in Ethiopia’s legendary food. Known for its distinctive flavors and communal eating style, the cuisine here is something you can’t miss. Be sure to try injera, the sour flatbread that accompanies almost every meal, and pair it with wat (a spicy stew) or tibs (sautéed meat). The array of spices and flavors unique to Ethiopian cooking makes every meal a memorable experience.

For those with a sweet tooth, Ethiopia also has a range of traditional sweets like Baklava and Kolo, a simple snack made of roasted barley. Whether you’re sitting at a street café or in a high-end restaurant, Addis Ababa’s food scene is one of the best in East Africa.

Why You Should Visit Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa is more than just a stopover city—it’s a destination in itself. Whether you’re interested in history, culture, food, or just soaking in the beauty of the Ethiopian highlands, this city has something for everyone. The people, the food, and the scenery make it an unforgettable experience, and I can’t wait to return to explore even more.

If you’re planning a trip to East Africa, don’t overlook Addis Ababa. The city is truly a hidden gem and one of the most underrated cities I’ve visited in a long time. Its unique mix of modernity, history, and culture makes it an essential stop for any traveler looking to experience something new and exciting in Africa.

So, what are you waiting for? Pack your bags, book your flight to Addis Ababa, and get ready for an adventure you’ll never forget! You won’t be disappointed.
